The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. (Psalm 16:5) In the Bible the casting of lots was seen as a legitimate way of discerning the will of God in a particular life decision. The Hebrew word translated ‘lot’ in this fifth verse of Psalm 16 refers to the pebbles used for casting lots. ‘Lot’ here means the thing assigned by casting lots. ‘ … you (God) hold my lot.’ This does not absolve a believer from making decisions and using God given gifts and human attributes in life choices. When the Psalmist prays to God, “…you hold my lot” this does not mean the die is cast or the game is rigged for a certain outcome. Rather, it seems to me, such faith gives a believer the freedom to pursue, confident in the One who holds her lot. As Jesus said, “Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you.”
