FROM THE MINISTER'S DESK
War rages in the Ukraine. A ministry colleague, whose work included years of ministry in Vietnam during wartime, sent me a note titled ‘Thoughts on War.’ In his reflection he referenced one of C. S. Lewis’ books, The Weight of Glory. The book is a collection of Lewis’ World War 2 lectures. In it he deals with being a Christian in the tensions of war, suffering, nationalism, and patriotic duty. One of the overarching themes of these lectures is that war is the ultimate evidence of human sin, demonstrating who we humans really are. Lewis writes, “The war creates no absolutely new situation; it simply aggravates the permanent human situation so that we can no longer ignore it. Human life has always been lived on the edge of a precipice.” Lewis names this precipice as Hell. Friends, pray for the cessation of hostilities; for peace; for those whose lives have been horribly disrupted and disfigured; for a turning away from sin to God.
