FROM THE MINISTER’S DESK
I hear people refer to the coming weekend as Easter Weekend. Indeed Sunday is Easter—a great day of celebration—but we Christians must be careful not to hurry past Friday. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the announcement of the victory won by Christ at the cross. Yes, the victory over death occurred on Good Friday when Jesus exclaimed in triumph, “It is finished.” ‘Good Friday’ is a modern expression. In the mediaeval era Christians spoke of God’s Friday. For on this day God acted definitively on behalf of humankind. On this day God did something apart from which the human predicament would be hopeless. He did something apart from which we would have remained helpless. Good Friday, God’s Friday, has eternal significance for the entire human creation. It is from the perspective of God’s Friday that we can know true Easter joy.
