A few reminders for this week May 13 to May 19, 2024

FROM THE MINISTER’S DESK

On Sunday we celebrate Pentecost; the birthday of the church when God poured his Spirit on those first believers. Jesus had said to them, “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf,” and “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.” Note that the Holy Spirit Jesus sends is the Spirit of truth. It isn’t the case that truth exists outside of God, and we can use it like a measuring stick to see if God is truthful. God is the truth. Recall Jesus said, “I am the truth.” Therefore, God, through his Spirit’s work in our lives, can only be truthful to us for no falsehood dwells in him. The Spirit of God is entirely trustworthy. You know the Spirit’s voice; it is that voice that ever points us to Jesus.

SUNDAY MORNING WORSHIP 10:00 A.M.

Central United Church welcomes you to join our Worship Service Sunday mornings at 10:00 am. In worship we proclaim our faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour; God’s word is read and preached, sacraments celebrated, faith sung and prayers offered.

Sunday services are also livestreamed (and recorded) through the Church website or you can join here. A copy of the bulletin for this Sunday’s Service is attached here.

This Sunday’s Scripture readings are Acts 2:1-21, Romans 8:22-27 and John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15. You can also find a daily scripture message at the top of our website.

AN UPDATE FROM THE FINANCE COMMITTEE

Through April 30th, we are reporting a $7000 YTD shortfall versus our Budget. The good news is that Expenses are under Budget by $12,000; however, Offerings are down $16,000 versus Budget.

Compared to 2023 April YTD, Offerings are down $13,000.  It appears that fewer people are donating and at a lower level than last year. We are hoping that this is a timing issue. Regular donations through the year help our cashflow, particularly as we get into the traditionally lower donation months of the summer, while expenses continue. So, it would be great to see what we can do before the end of June to recoup the offering shortfall.

Our approved 2024 Budget included a 6% increase in donations to achieve a balanced operating budget. The Finance Committee encourages you to review your donations YTD. Donations can be made via automatic monthly withdrawals (PAR); Interac e-transfers; Canada Helps, or Cash/Cheque. Details are on our website and on the Donation Cards in the Pews. Contact Sally Sandiford (sally_sandiford@hotmail.com) to sign up for PAR or for information on your YTD givings.

We thank you for your time, talent and financial resources that allow us to fund and execute on our Mission to ”Grow in Christ and help others grow with us.”

LEMONADE ON THE LAWN

Beginning Sunday, May 26th

Summer is coming and Lemonade on the Lawn will resume for the Sundays late May through to the end of August this year.

However, the only way this can happen is if you, our congregation, supports this by signing up for the weeks you are able to assist with set up, pouring and clean up each week. This is a very easy task as all supplies will be available at the church. Sign up sheets are located on the bulletin board outside the Friendship room in the Narthex. Please consider this, so that we can all enjoy the physical reconnection with old and new friends in our church.

Please check your calendars and commit to a week or two that will work for you! If you have any questions you may contact Kathy Hoy by email at kathyhoy5@gmail.com. Your service to the church will be appreciated by all!

GUEST MINISTER – May 26, 2024

Pastor Sean Howard

Our guest minister on Sunday, May 26 has a direct connection to the implementation of a portion of our church’s Strategic Plan!

Sean Howard is the Campus Director, Southern Ontario, InterVarsity Canada. (Intervarsity Christian Fellowship). As York University opens its new campus just down the street, we at CUC hope to connect with students and provide them with a welcoming Christian community. We believe this relationship will provide benefits and opportunities to both the students and our congregation as we grow together in Christ!

We look forward to what Pastor Howard has to share as he brings us the message on the 26th.

UNIONVILLE FESTIVAL

June 1 – 2, 2024

The Unionville Festival will be held on June 1-2 with an expected turnout of over 30,000 visitors. On Saturday, June 1, from 10 am to 3 pm, our church will be offering drinks and hosting children’s activities on the church’s front lawn. The aim is to promote our summer camp and Sunday service. Additionally, should we have enough volunteers, we may open our sanctuary to share the history and stories of our church in Unionville. Please sign up on the bulletin board or contact Christina Ng for more information.
