FROM THE MINISTER’S DESK
In the Christian calendar Ascension Day is today (Thursday, May 21); accordingly, we will be reading the story of the Ascension of Jesus (Acts 1:6-14) on Sunday. In that story we read that ‘a cloud took Jesus out of their sight;’ the way to understand the significance of the cloud is to look to the imagery of the cloud in the older testament. In Psalm 68 we read of God “who rides upon the clouds” and of when God “went out before your people, when you marched through the wilderness.” The reference is to the cloud of God’s presence that went in front of Israel in the wilderness (Exodus 13:21). The cloud is the cloud of our Lord’s presence with us. The disciples do not experience Jesus ascending to the cloud as absence from them, but his presence with them in a new way. A good way to celebrate Ascension Day is to hear the Hallelujah Chorus again; “and He shall reign forever and ever.”
