A few reminders for this week Sept. 9, 2024 to Sept. 15, 2024

GUEST MINISTER

Sept. 15, 2024

Our guest minister this Sunday will be Rev. Dr. Orville James. Rev. James was born in Ottawa, educated at Queen’s and Princeton, and ordained in 1978. He has served United Churches in New Brunswick and S. Ontario, and a Methodist Church in Maine. He has also done 2 ‘exchanges’ with the British Methodist Church, serving congregations in Wales and England.

Before retirement Orville served Wellington Square United in Burlington, Ontario for 23 years.  Following retirement he moved to Kitchener (to be close to family – with 2 grandsons, ages 5 & 7)

He now considers himself a ‘free-agent for Jesus’ and is enjoying supporting the next generation of ministers, and playing with six grandchildren spread from Vancouver to London, U.K.

He is hopefully eager that the church will continue to find ways to reach spiritually hungry Canadians; And… he remains confident that a Canadian team will win the Stanley Cup once more in his lifetime!

SUNDAY MORNING WORSHIP 10:00 A.M.

Central United Church welcomes you to join our Worship Service Sunday mornings at 10:00 am. In worship we proclaim our faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour; God’s word is read and preached, sacraments celebrated, faith sung and prayers offered.

Sunday services are also livestreamed (and recorded) through the Church website or you can join here. A copy of the bulletin for this Sunday’s Service is attached here.

This Sunday’s Scripture reading is Matthew 6:19-21, 24. You can also find a daily scripture message at the top of our website.

RETIREMENT THANK YOU

FROM REV. CLUBINE

I begin by saying that words cannot fully express the joy that floods my heart as I reflect on the wonder of your love expressed for me as you marked my retirement last Sunday. It began with a joyful worship service, and long will I remember how you sang my favourite hymn ‘And Can It Be,’ accompanied by the thunder of organ and piano. I was simply overwhelmed by your expressions of love and appreciation, both spoken and written, for the years of ministry at Central. I am humbled that our Lord would so profoundly use me—even me—as his instrument in promoting your faith and spiritual well-being. You are a wonderful congregation to serve among. Thank you for the generous financial expression of your love inviting me to consider using it to travel. Thank you for your part in the work of art my brother prepared, a beautiful painting of Central United. I will find an appropriate place to display it and think of you each time I see it. Thank you for planning such a lovely retirement event. The speeches by the various speakers will long be remembered. It was a special delight that you invited my family to join with you. Thank you for your generosity and love expressed in a myriad of ways. You will continue to be in my prayers that our Lord will long bless your faithful witness to the good news of Jesus Christ. I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you. (Philippians 1:3)

Love in Christ,

Rev. Dr. James Clubine

MESSAGE OF THANKS TO THE CONGREGATION

Sunday, September 8, 2024 we were part of the wonderful, bittersweet celebration of the ministry of Rev. Dr. James Clubine. It was thrilling from the first organ note at the masterful hands of Dr. George Arnold, to the beautiful choir music, to Sarah Wyse’s touching solo, to the sharing of our Lord’s Supper. Then it was on to Markham Museum where 175 friends and family shared a delicious meal courtesy of “Catering by Gregory’s” and enjoyed the programme expertly led by Mark Cullen. The speakers, Rev. Dr. Andrew Stirling, Rev. Dr. Victor Shepherd, Sharon Gayman-Laird, Bill Clubine and Mark Ono lovingly led us through the more personal side of Rev. Dr. Jim.

There may be some who were unable to celebrate with us on Sunday. The guest book will be in the Narthex, Sunday Sept. 15 if you wish to sign it. Cards or messages of best wishes may be mailed to:
