Weddings

Our practices with respect to wedding services are shaped by the Bible’s teaching of God’s creative action in making male and female for each other.  Jesus spoke of God’s creative work this way: Jesus said: “Haven’t you read that at the beginning the Creator made them male and female and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’?  So they are no longer two, but one.  Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.” (Matthew 19: 4 – 6)

The wedding service is a worship service in which we come together to seek the favour and blessing of God for your marriage.  The focus of this worship is to offer our thanksgiving to God for the gift of marriage and to experience the activity of the Spirit of God joining us together ‘so they are no longer two, but one.’

The first movement of our worship in the wedding service is gathering before God.  This first part includes the processional, statement of purpose and a prayer of approach.  The second activity of the worship is to hear the Word of God and listen for what God is saying to us on this occasion.  In this part we read passages from the Bible and hear a short reflection on the implications for us of these texts.  The third movement in worship is to respond to what God has said to us in and through the Word.  On the day of your wedding service our response to God is that you will exchange your wedding vows.  This third part includes vows, exchanging rings, declaration of marriage, prayer for blessing and benediction.
