Week of Jan. 13 – Jan. 19, 2025

FROM THE MINISTER’S DESK

If I could go back and start over, I think I might have become a Sommelier instead of a Pastor. Okay, maybe not…I think God had something to say in the matter. But I do really love nice wines, and I like learning about what makes some wines better than others. In one of my seminary classes 22 years ago, a fellow student wrote a poem comparing each person in the class to a kind of wine. She said I was a Barolo, which I had never heard of. I looked into it and discovered it’s a rather expensive wine! I was flattered, but I could never bring myself to pay that much money for a bottle of wine. About 6 years ago I finally decided to treat myself and buy a bottle of Barolo to share with friends when I celebrated running a Half-Marathon. It was so delicious! Definitely worth the wait.

I’m glad that Jesus appreciated the pleasure of sharing a nice glass of wine with friends, and I’m glad that Mary gave him the little nudge that he needed to provide the finest wine for the wedding celebration at Cana. The miracle at the wedding in Cana is a foreshadowing of when Jesus’ body and blood would become the bread and the wine that believers will share at the most glorious wedding banquet of all time.
