FROM THE MINISTER’S DESK
I was (am?) the youngest child in my family, so I can remember back to family dinners where I was relegated to “The Kids’ Table.” It was fine; I was a kid!
As the extended family grew and changed, I got older and had more younger cousins. There came a day, then, when I outgrew “The Kids’ Table,” and I remember feeling so important to be finally seated at the main table!
From a very young age we like to feel important, and when we read Luke 14:7-14 it can seem like Jesus is offering us a concrete strategy for how to make ourselves look important. This is not Jesus’ way, though. Jesus’ way was to “not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing…” (Phil. 2:6b-7a).
So, what is Jesus trying to tell us in this parable? That’s what we’ll be looking at this Sunday! See you there.
